RI to host World
Conference on Climate Change
Bogor
(ANTARA News) - Indonesia will host a world conference on climate
change in Badung, Bali, on December 3-14, 2007, Environment Minister Rahmat
Witoelar said here on Tuesday. The minister said the conference on climate
change would be attended by about 10,000 participants from about 189 countries
who would include 150 economic and environment ministers. Witoelar said
about 2,500 journalists of print and electronic media from various countries
were expected to cover the event. He said developed and developing countries
that would send delegates to the conference included the United States,
Britain, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Russia, Australia, China, Japan, South
Korea, Argentine, Mexico, Kenya, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, Iran, Malaysia,
the Philippines, Maldives, Pakistan.
The minister said the Bali conference was expected to serve as a continuation
of the Kyoto meeting in 2001, and to decide a plan of action and world
cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the post Kyoto protocol
period which would end in 2012. "This is a good momentum for Indonesia
to strengthen its bargaining position in the world`s efforts to improve
global climate change," he said. The more so as Bali had been selected
to host the world climate change conference. The minister said the conference
on climate change would serve as a rare forum for advanced countries and
developing nations to negotiate.
He said through the conference advanced countries were expected to contribute
a large amount of funds to developing nations in an effort to assist them
in handling climate change. It was estimated funds contributed to help
stop global warming caused by climate change in the last 10 years totaled
US$30 billion. "Members of the internatinal community are now in
panic over climate change the impact of which has begun to be felt in
such phenomena as a rise in the sea surface at the north and south poles,"
he said.
